Lipsey 6th grade math classes have been studying decimals in the real world. Students added, subtracted, multiplied, and divided decimals. In groups, students received a subway menu with a set amount of play money for each person. The students had to decide what they could afford on the menu, include tax, split the bill, and decide on a tip. The sixth grade math teachers had an idea for students to complete this project and later enjoy subway sandwiches, chips, and juice.
This project was based on decimal fluency (6th grade skill), math standard 6.NS.3 Fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit decimals using the standard algorithm for each operation. Students used their decimal fluency skills to complete this project at school. This Subway opportunity allowed students to make connections to math in the real world and have fun. The students and teachers enjoyed the Subway Snack which was the culminating activity of this project.
