Lesson Plan – ELA – Stokes

August 28-Sept. 1, 2017

 

Focus Standards Addressed:

RL.5.4-Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative language such as metaphors and similes.

RF5.3a - Use combined knowledge of all letter‐sound correspondences, syllabication  patterns, and morphology (e.g., roots and affixes) to read accurately  unfamiliar multisyllabic words in context and out of context. 

W5.1-W5.1d-Writing opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information.

 

Other Standards Addressed:

RL.5.1 – Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.

  1. 5.2 - Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text,  including how characters in a story or drama respond to challenges or how the  speaker in a poem reflects upon a topic; summarize the text.

SL5.1a-d – Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions with diverse partners on grade 5 topics and text, building on other’s ideas and expressing their own clearly.

SL 5.2- Summarize a written text read aloud.

SL.5.3- Summarize the points a speaker makes and explain how each claim is supported by reasons and evidence.

RF.5.4a – RF.5.4c – Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension

 

Monday

 

Word work- 15 minutes: TTW help the student fill in a graphic organizer about the affix hypo and hyper.  TSW have to find/use words, pictures, definitions, and sentences to represent the affix.

 

Vocabulary-20 minutes:  TSW copy the definitions for this week’s words.  TTW go through the words with the students and lead a class discussion about the words and their definitions.

 

Comprehension- 30-40 minutes:  TTW introduce the standard for the week. TTW give students time to write the weekly schedule in their planner. TTW pass out the passage for the week called The Big City. TTW review writing a summary from the previous week and instruct the students to be looking for the MAIN things that happen as they read. TSW take turns reading parts of the passage aloud. TSW underline key details they see in the text. TSW answer questions 1-3 on their own while the teacher walks around to check for understanding of them. TTW give the student’s time to compare their answers with a partner and then the teacher will go over the correct answers. The class will work questions 4 and 5 together.

 

 

Homework:  Common Core Weekly Reading Homework-Monday. Read AR book.

 

 

 

 

 

Tuesday

 

Word work- 15 minutes: TTW help the student fill in a graphic organizer about the affix im/in and milli.  TSW have to find/use words, pictures, definitions, and sentences to represent the affix.

 

Vocabulary- 20 minutes: TSW draw pictures describing the words.  TSW share some of their ideas with the class.  TSW discuss why some ideas work and others do not.

 

Comprehension- 30-40 minutes:  TSW close read the text from the previous day again to review.  TTW go through the text with the students.  TSW define words with a dictionary that they do not know.  TTW lead a class discussion about the text.  TSW effectively express their own ideas and build off other students’ ideas.  TTW pass out questions to respond to the text.  TSW focus on RL.2 summarizing the text and RL.1 quoting and inferencing from the text.  TSW use transition words and phrases to connect thoughts in showing evidence.

 

Homework:  Common Core Weekly Homework-Tuesday.  Read AR

 

Wednesday

 

Word work- 15 minutes: TTW help the student fill in a graphic organizer about the affix port and struct TSW have to find/use words, pictures, definitions, and sentences to represent the affix.

 

Vocabulary- 20 minutes:  TSW draw a picture to represent their vocabulary words.  TSW lead a discussion on what type of pictures they can draw. 

 

Comprehension- 30-40 minutes: TTW give a writing prompt to “The Big City.”  TTW review the OREO writing strategy.  TSW use the OREO strategy to plan an essay to the prompt.  TTW walk around and observe, answer questions.  TSW use the planning guide to write the essay using transition words, subordinate conjunctions, and coordinate conjunctions.  TTW remind students to write compound and complex sentences in their essay.  TTW collect and grade essays for a daily grade. 

 

Homework:  Common Core Weekly Reading Homework-Wednesday.  Read AR.

 

 

 

Thursday

Word Works- 5 minutes:  TTW review WW for test tomorrow.  TTW check students’ completion of WW for a daily grade.

 

Vocabulary-5 minutes:  TTW review Voc. for test tomorrow.  TTW check students’ completion of Voc. Weekly work for a daily grade.

 

Comprehension- minutes: TTW pass out a state practice test with one passage and multiple choice questions which cover standards that have been taught so far this 9 weeks ( RL1,2,3,4).  TSW close read the passage and answer questions for understanding.  TTW collect/grade/record. 

 

Homework: Common Core Weekly Homework-Thursday.  Homework is due tomorrow.  Read AR.  Study vocabulary and word works for test tomorrow. 

 

Friday

Bell work- 5 minutes:  Review Work Works and Vocabulary for assessment. 

 

Test- 45-50 minutes:  TSW have a few minutes to look over their notes.  TTW check for completion of Homework.  TSW take the test on RL.5.4 - Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative language such as metaphors and similes, vocabulary, and affixes.

 

Homework:  Read AR!
